Blackjack History & Evolution
The history of blackjack is a long and interesting one, and in fact it is one of the most widely debated topics in the gambling world. While some sources suggest that the origins of blackjack actually came from a similar game that was played in Ancient times by the Romans, Egyptians and Chinese long before the invention of playing cards, the most commonly believed theory is that the game came from a similar one known as ‘Vingt-et-Un'. However, before Vingt-et-Un became popular in the 1600s, a game that was popular in Spain in the 1400s had very similar principles – this games was known as One and Thirty.
Evidence suggests that the game Vingt-et-Un was very popular with French military and political leader Napoleon Bonaparte, and this is one of the reasons why the game became established across the world. French colonists supposedly bought the game to North America in the 1800s, and since the legalisation of gambling in Nevada in 1931 the game became a hit. In 1950's the first basic blackjack strategy came into existence, courtesy of a group of statisticians known as The Four Horseman. They were looking to boost their chances of winning and developed a way to reduce the house edge with this strategy. Now, blackjack has become such a popular game that you can play it wherever you are, whenever you want to whether that's at a casino or at home by playing an online casino on your mobile, tablet or desktop.
Blackjack Fundamentals & Basics
Blackjack is one of the most unique casino games in the world, and this is due to the fact that you play solely against the dealer rather than against everyone else on the table with you. The objective of the game is to beat the dealer – not to reach 21 as the common misconception would have you believe. In order to meet the objective, there are two different avenues that you can take. Firstly, you can aim to have a hand whose total is higher than the dealer's and make sure that you don't go over 21. Secondly, you can aim to push the dealer over 21 (depending on the rules of the table).
In this game, the card numbers represent the value of each card, meaning 2 is worth two, 3 is worth three, 10 is worth ten etc. A face card is also equivalent to the value of 10, and an Ace is worth either 1 or 11 depending on what you need to make the best hand.
The blackjack table itself is simple. The shoe contains all of the cards, and from the dealer's left there are a variety of bases: first, second, third, fourth and fifth base. This is a position on the table. On the table, it will tell you how much the blackjack table pays, and the rules on what the dealer must draw to and stand on. In addition to this, you will see an insurance section, which is a side bet you can place during the game in order to protect yourself against the dealer having a blackjack. This section will tell you how much insurance will pay if you were to win, and also how much a blackjack pays during the game.
When playing the game, there are a number of player decisions that you will have to make: hit (get another card), stand (no more cards), split (creating two hands from the original one), double down (in this bet, you will only be given one more card but you will double your initial bet. If you win you receive double back).
Blackjack Strategy, Tips & Tricks
As shown in the History of Blackjack video, the first basic blackjack strategy was developed in the 1950s. Knowing the probability of what decisions to make when playing a game of blackjack is important. The decisions that you make will determine the outcome rather than sheer luck like a slot machine or roulette table. The basic blackjack strategy chart is a great key when it comes to knowing what decisions to make throughout the game. It tells you when to hit, stand, double and split depending on the hand that you have compared to what the dealer is showing on his/her ‘upcard'.
Rather than memorising the entire table however, you may want to consider a number of rules and tips that can help you make the right decisions as you play. The first is the Rule of 10's. With 10's being the most common cards in the deck, people generally assume that every card that is about to be drawn or that the dealer has in the hole is a 10-value card. Another tip is to always hit on a soft 17, simply because you can never go bust and you have a good chance of getting 21. However, hitting on a hard 17 is a bad idea, as it is very easy to go bust. When it comes to making the right decisions however, doubling down can be equally as risky and it is advised that generally only advanced players should do this. There are a huge number of rules and tips that you can see in our video above that can provide you with a great basis when it comes to playing the world's most popular casino game, blackjack.
